May 2011: This summer, the general pedagogy program will follow last year's model of providing a program of 80 hours in 3 weeks. In addition to the program being held from July 18 to Aug 5 in Ouanaminthe, a new site will be added in Trou du Nord with the program being held from July 25 to Aug 12. We have invited 4 members of the education department at the Public University in Cape Haitian (UPNCH) to attend our program, with the intent that UPNCH will be providing a degree program starting in the fall 2011, in cooperation with Pwof Ansanm and City University of New York (CUNY). The funding for the Ouanaminthe and Trou Du Nord programs for 2011 has been largely offset by the Donor Advised Fund of Rotary International.
April 2011: The secondary pedagogy manual has been completely edited and sent off for printing. In the past, we provided the manual in a 3-ring binder form. This year the participants will receive the materials as a manual. The entire contents are available on-line here.
September 2010: In 2010, the secondary general pedagogy program was changed from a 4-week program split between spring break and summer, to a 3-week program held only in the summer. The number of program hours remained the same at 80 hours. In addition, two second level pilot programs were presented by a trainer from Columbia Teachers College. The programs focused on integrating reading techniques in French and in History. The full report from the 2010 program is available here.
In late January, 1000s of students flooded into the northeast. Many lacked resources to pay tuition for school. Furthermore, most schools are already overcrowded, accommodating as many as 120 students to a class. The teachers’ group in Ouanaminthe (Pwof Ansanm Wanament) found a facility where they could hold classes for the displaced students in the afternoons. Within a month, they set up a school, got MENFP approval and registered students for grades 7, 8 and 9. The school formally began classes on March 1. The school is called CEPAW, located in the center of Ouanaminthe. The teachers were given modest sum by Pwof Ansanm to purchase some books and supplies. Rotary District 7430 has collected backpacks with additional supplies which will arrive on March 25. Consequently, there are now 75 students who will be able to finish their school this year due to the efforts of the local teachers’ group in Ouanaminthe.
